The experience

The tour opens with a flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, where you board a boat on Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake, to visit the island monasteries of Kidane Mihiret and Azwa Mariam before watching the sunset over the water. From there, a 180-kilometer asphalted road carries you north through Amhara villages to Gonder, where you explore the Royal Enclosure with its six castles, the only ancient Camelot in Africa and the seat of King Fasiledes. You also visit Fasiledes Pool, still used for the Timket epiphany celebrations, and Debre Birihan Sillasie Church, known for its ceiling painted with religious scenes.

The third day is a full drive to Lalibela, the historical city built around 11 rock-hewn churches carved from single blocks of stone in the 12th century. On your final full day there, you visit the first and second groups of churches in the morning, representing Earthly Jerusalem, then after lunch see the third group, including the Church of St. George, which symbolizes the Ark of Noah. The tour ends with a morning flight back to Addis Ababa, with transfer to Bole International Airport.

Overnight stays are in Tana Hotel in Bahir Dar, Goha Hotel in Gonder, and Lalibela Hotel. Dinners are included each evening. The guide speaks English and meets you for pickup at the start. You'll pass through Menagesha Suba Forest Park on the final leg, seeing the landscape of Ethiopia's northern highlands from the air.
