The experience

The National Museum opens your first morning. You'll see Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old fossil that anchors Ethiopia's place in human history, alongside other archaeological finds. From there, Holy Trinity Cathedral shows you the scale of Ethiopian Orthodox architecture: stained glass windows, the tombs of Emperor Haile Selassie and his wife, and the weight of centuries in one building. Lunch is traditional injera with stews at a local restaurant, the kind of meal that tastes different when you're eating it where it belongs.

The Mercato fills your afternoon. It's the largest open-air market in Africa, and the description "bustling" doesn't quite cover it: colors, vendors calling, the smell of spices and leather and fresh produce all at once. You move through it with your guide, who knows which stalls matter and where the light is best for photographs. By evening you're on Entoto Mountains watching the city spread out below you as the sun drops, with Emperor Menelik II's palace and St. Mary's Church nearby if you want to climb a bit more.

Day two is a 2- to 3-hour drive north to Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia's most important religious sites. The monastery complex holds ancient churches, chapels, and views down into the Blue Nile Gorge that make the drive worth it. The Portuguese Bridge is a short stop: a historical landmark and a vantage point for the gorge. After lunch at a local cafe, you walk the area with your guide, looking for Chelada Baboons and learning what grows here and why it matters. The return to Addis closes the loop.
