3-day Danakil Depression tour from Addis Ababa: Erta Ale volcano
Sleep at the rim of a permanent lava lake inside an active volcano.
A 3-day tour from Addis Ababa into Ethiopia's Danakil Depression, one of Earth's lowest and most extreme landscapes, with nights spent camping at Erta Ale volcano and days exploring salt lakes, lava fields and camel salt-mining routes. The tour includes all transport by 4WD, a professional guide, camping gear, meals and entrance fees. You fly from Addis Ababa to Semera on day one and return on day three. Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and the terrain demands stamina, but the itinerary is built around what the landscape itself requires.

The experience
Three days means you reach the Danakil's signature sights without rushing: Erta Ale's lava lake on night one, the crater pits and Lake Giulietti on day two, and the colored salt formations at Dallol plus Lake Assal on day three before flying back. The route opens with a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Semera (included), then a 4WD drive to Erta Ale. You trek to the volcano's rim at 20:00 hours (camels carry the camping kit and supplies), and spend the night watching the lava move inside the caldera, 613 meters below where you sleep. It is the world's only permanent lava lake and one of only five on Earth.
Day two starts before sunrise at the crater pits: the main pit-crater runs 200 meters deep and 350 meters across, with two smaller pits beside it. After descending by 9 am, you drive to Lake Giulietti (also called Lake Afrera), a salt water body more than 100 meters below sea level in one of the planet's deepest depressions. The landscape shifts from volcanic to mineral, and you camp overnight at Hamed ela. Day three takes you to Ragad, where salt workers break blocks from the ground and load them onto camels. You watch the work happen. Then Dallol itself, 116 meters below sea level, with its colorful salt formations shaped by volcanic activity. Lake Assal sits nearby. If the season allows, you walk with camel caravans and the Afar people who live there. The return flight leaves Semera at 17:35.
The conditions are not mild: dust and smoke hang thick in the air, and temperatures stay above 40°C most days. You sleep on light mattresses and mats in the open air, cook over camp stoves, and drink unlimited bottled water supplied throughout. A professional guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language travels with the group, and police and scout services operate in the Afar region as required by local law. All meals, entrance fees, licenses and 4WD transport are included. You bring a light backpack for the trek to Erta Ale, sun cream, a hat, a jacket for the volcano's rim, and any personal medicines you need.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language, so you follow the commentary and ask questions in your own tongue. Book the language that matches your group before checkout. The 3-day length fits the major sights (Erta Ale, the crater pits, Dallol and Lake Assal) without the longer routes that add remote salt flats or the shorter versions that skip the lava lake overnight.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 7 years); Infant (4 to 5 years). Under 4: they can't be included in the booking.
How high is Erta Ale volcano and what makes its lava lake unusual?
Erta Ale stands 613 meters tall with a lava lake at its summit, one of only five permanent lava lakes in the world and the longest-existing one. The volcano's name means "smoky mountain" in the Afar language, and the caldera at the top is 1 kilometer square.
What do I actually see and do on day two after leaving Erta Ale?
Day two begins with a sunrise view of the crater pits from the rim, then you descend by 9 am and drive to Lake Giulietti (Lake Afrera), a salt lake more than 100 meters below sea level. You spend the day in this extreme depression and camp overnight at Hamed ela. The landscape is mineral-based and shaped by the depression's geology rather than active volcanic features.
What happens at Dallol and what is the salt-mining activity I see?
Dallol sits 116 meters below sea level and displays colorful salt formations created by volcanic activity. At Ragad earlier that morning, you watch salt workers breaking salt blocks from the ground, cutting them into rectangular pieces and loading them onto camels for transport. This is the traditional mining method in the region.
What is included in the tour price and what do I need to bring myself?
The tour includes all 4WD transport, a professional guide, camping equipment, all meals, unlimited water, entrance fees, and accommodation throughout the three days. You need to bring a light backpack for the volcano trek, sun cream, sunglasses, a hat, a jacket for the volcano's rim, toilet paper, wipes, and any personal first-aid medicines or medications you take regularly.
How do I get to Semera and back to Addis Ababa?
You fly from Addis Ababa to Semera on the morning of day one (departure 07:10, arrival 08:30), and the tour picks you up from Semera airport or hotel. On day three, the tour drives you back to Semera airport for the return flight to Addis Ababa (departure 17:35, arrival 18:55). The domestic flights are not included in the tour price.
