The experience
Lalibela opens the tour with eleven rock-hewn churches carved during the reign of King Lalibela (1181–1221) and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You arrive by morning flight from Addis and spend the afternoon exploring the first group of churches north of the Jordan River, organized into clusters cut directly from the stone. The night is spent at Mountain View Hotel in the town itself, so the second day can cover the remaining churches without the rush of a day trip.
From Lalibela, a flight takes you to Axum, where you spend hours among the ancient ruins before driving 190 kilometers through the Gheralta plains to Hawzen. The plains hold their own rock-hewn churches scattered across the landscape. Hawzen serves as the base for exploring them. The route then turns toward the Danakil Depression, one of the most geologically active places on Earth. Three tectonic plates meet at the Afar Triple Junction, creating lava lakes, hot springs, geysers and fissures that shape the terrain in ways found nowhere else.
The Danakil section demands early starts and rough roads. You drive 80 kilometers through solidified lava, rock and sand to Dodom, the base camp 17 kilometers from Erta Ale volcano. After dinner, you trek to the rim at 20:00 hours (camels carry the camping gear and sleeping materials), and spend the night watching the world's only permanent lava lake boil and shift in the crater below. The next morning, sunrise views precede the descent back to Dodom by 9 a.m. You then drive to Lake Giulietti (Afrera), a saltwater lake more than 100 meters below sea level, before continuing to the salt flats. On the final day, you visit Ragad to watch Afar workers mine salt from the ground, cut it into blocks and load it onto camels, then drive to Dallol at 116 meters below sea level (one of the lowest points on the planet) to see the colorful mineral deposits and salt formations. A flight back to Addis departs at 7:50 p.m., arriving at 9:10 p.m.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and French.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (1 year).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What are the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and why are they significant?
The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela are eleven churches carved directly from stone during the reign of King Lalibela in the 12th century and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are organized into groups and represent a unique architectural achievement, with the churches built downward into the rock rather than upward in the traditional manner.
What is Erta Ale and what will I see there?
Erta Ale is a shield volcano with a 1-kilometer-square caldera at its summit, notable for containing the world's only permanent lava lake. You trek to the rim at night and spend the night there watching the lava move and boil inside the crater, one of only five permanent lava lakes in the world and the longest-existing one since the early twentieth century.
How difficult is the trek to Erta Ale's rim?
The trek begins at 20:00 hours after dinner at the base camp and reaches the rim where you spend the night. The 80-kilometer drive to the base camp passes through some of the roughest roads in the world across changing terrain of lava, rock and sand, so the journey is physically demanding. Camels carry the camping materials and sleeping gear to the rim for you.
What happens at Dallol and the salt flats?
Dallol sits 116 meters below sea level and displays colorful mineral deposits and salt formations created by volcanic activity. You also visit salt-mining sites where Afar workers break salt from the ground, cut it into rectangular blocks and load it onto camels. Lake Assal and camel caravans are part of the route (camel caravans are not available July through early September).
How are the flights and accommodation arranged?
The tour includes flights from Addis to Lalibela, from Lalibela to Axum, and from Mekele back to Addis at the end. You stay at Mountain View Hotel (3-star) in Lalibela and at either Gerealta Lodge or Wukro Lodge in Hawzen. The Danakil section uses camping at Dodom and at the rim of Erta Ale.
