A 13th-century monastery carved into history, with a gorge and endemic wildlife in a single day

This day trip from Addis Ababa takes you to Debre Libanos Monastery, the oldest Orthodox Christian monastery in Ethiopia, founded in 1283 by Saint Tekle Haymanot. You'll walk the 16th-century Portuguese Bridge over the Jemma River Gorge, a tributary of the Blue Nile, and spot gelada monkeys and birds along the escarpment. The tour includes a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and a meal prepared in a local home.

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Debre Libanos and Portuguese Bridge

  • Drive from Addis Ababa to Debre Libanos
  • Visit Debre Libanos Monastery and museum
  • Walk on the Portuguese Bridge
  • Enjoy scenic views of Jemma River Gorge
  • Observe birds and gelada monkeys
  • Experience local habitation and homemade food
  • Participate in traditional coffee ceremony

The experience

The drive out of Addis Ababa takes two and a half hours to reach the monastery, which sits 105 kilometers away. Once there, you enter the church built by Emperor Haile Selassie I in the 1960s and visit the museum to understand how Saint Tekle Haymanot spent 29 years meditating in a cave before founding the site. The setting is dramatic: the monastery overlooks the Jemma River Gorge, and the escarpment drops away in cliffs that frame the landscape.

The Portuguese Bridge is the second major stop: a two-arched stone structure built in the 16th century (though some historians credit Ras Darge with its construction in the 19th century). Walking across it puts you directly above the gorge, where you can watch for gelada monkeys, a type of endemic baboon, and the birds that nest in the cliffs. The gorge itself is a branch of the Blue Nile, and the views stretch across the escarpment in both directions.

Between the sites, you'll visit a local home to taste homemade Ethiopian food and participate in a traditional coffee ceremony. This is not a staged performance but an everyday practice in Ethiopian households. Lunch is included and eaten in the community, giving you a direct sense of how people live outside the capital. The full day runs nine to ten hours, with an air-conditioned vehicle and a guide who speaks English or French, depending on your preference.
