The experience

The day starts with a pickup from your Addis Ababa hotel around 7 AM and a drive to Debre Libanos, a monastic center founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. You explore the monastery complex, which includes a church built in 1961 under Emperor Haile Selassie, and visit the on-site museum to see ancient religious artifacts, manuscripts and ceremonial crosses. A 15-minute uphill walk takes you to the sacred cave where the saint is said to have meditated for 29 years. Pilgrims still visit to receive holy water from the site.

From the monastery, you walk to the Portuguese Bridge, a stone-arch structure near the monastery that spans the Jemma River Valley with views of a waterfall below, especially dramatic during the rainy season. The bridge's origins are debated: some attribute it to Portuguese soldiers in the 16th century, others to Ethiopian Ras Darge in the 19th century building in Portuguese style. A short walk around the bridge area lets you take in the panoramic views of the deep gorge. After lunch at a local lodge with traditional Ethiopian food, you drive to a viewpoint overlooking the Blue Nile Gorge, a massive canyon often compared to the Grand Canyon. Time there is yours for photography and, if conditions allow, an optional short easy hike to different vantage points.

The return drive to Addis Ababa leaves around 3 PM. If time permits, your guide may arrange a stop for a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony or a brief visit to a local village. Drop-off at your hotel happens around 6 PM. Keep an eye out for Gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia and often spotted in the monastery area, as well as various bird species. The vehicle is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided throughout, and all entrance fees are included.
