The experience
The drive north from Addis Ababa covers 110 kilometers through Entoto Mountains and the Sululta plains to reach Debre Libanos, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haimanot. The monastery sits above the Jemma River Gorge, a tributary of the Blue Nile, and is one of the holiest sites in Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. A 15-minute walk on foot takes you across a river and up a hill to the church, where pilgrims queue to receive holy water believed to carry the saint's blessing.
The hike through Jemma Valley is where the day opens up. You'll spot endemic Gelada baboons and a range of bird life as you move through the gorge. The Portuguese Bridge, a 33-meter span built either by Portuguese or Indian masons in the 17th century (or later in the Gondarine period), stands ten meters above the stream on three arches. The stonework is precise enough that in places the masonry blends seamlessly with the natural rock beneath it. The bridge's roadway is 2.75 meters wide, lined with low castellations, and the central arch rests on two large boulders the stream has naturally provided.
Lunch arrives at a viewpoint overlooking the Jemma River Gorge, paired with a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. The tour runs nine hours total, with an air-conditioned minivan handling the drive and a professional guide leading the stops. Pickup starts at 9:00 am from your hotel or preferred point in Addis Ababa.
