itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Visit Debre Libanos and Portuguese Bridge

  • Explore Debre Libanos monastery
  • Learn monastery history and museums
  • See Ethiopian endemic Gelada baboons
  • Walk downhill to Portuguese Bridge
  • Observe birdlife near the bridge
  • View waterfalls at Portuguese Bridge
  • Stop at Jemma River Gorge viewpoint
  • Drive back to Addis Ababa

“Try the coffee, it’s stronger here,” our driver Tesfaye grinned as we stopped at a roadside stand just outside Addis Ababa. The air already felt different—cooler, with that earthy smell after last night’s rain. I watched an old man in a blue shawl pour thick coffee into tiny cups while goats wandered past. It’s funny how quickly the city noise fades once you leave; by the time we reached Debre Libanos, it was mostly birds and distant bells.

Inside the monastery, our local guide Mekdes explained how St Teklehaimanot supposedly stood praying on one leg for years—I can’t even do five minutes without fidgeting. The walls were covered in colorful icons, some chipped but beautiful. There was this moment when a monk passed us silently in the corridor, his robe brushing against rough stone. I felt oddly small and peaceful at the same time. We peeked into the museum too—old crosses, manuscripts with faded script, things that felt heavy with stories.

The drive to the Portuguese Bridge was bumpier than I expected (hold your coffee tight), but worth it for that first view over Jemma Gorge. It’s huge—almost dizzying when you look down. We walked across the narrow bridge while kids waved from behind thorny bushes. The waterfall below wasn’t roaring (wrong season maybe), but mist still hung in the air and made everything smell green and alive. Suddenly someone shouted “Gelada!” and there they were—those shaggy baboons with their red chests, picking grass right by the cliff edge like they owned the place. I tried to snap a photo but mostly just stared.

Heading back toward Addis Ababa, Tesfaye played old Ethiopian songs on low volume and nobody talked much—we just watched hills roll by under late afternoon clouds. I still think about that silence sometimes; it felt like something important had settled in me out there.
