The experience

The tour centers on Debre Libanos, a monastic settlement that has anchored Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity since the 13th century. A guide leads a two-hour walk through the monastery grounds, explaining the history and spiritual significance of the site and the life of the surrounding area. Lunch follows at a vantage point overlooking the Jemma River gorge, one of the Nile's tributaries, where the land drops nearly 1,000 meters to the valley floor.

After lunch, you walk about 300 meters down to the Portuguese Bridge, a 16th-century span built by Ethiopians despite its narrow, Portuguese-style construction. In the rainy season, a cascade flows just below it. The gorge itself is home to Gelada baboons (an endemic mammal also called the bleeding-heart baboon) and several vulture species (Lammergeier, Rüppell's, and Lappet-faced) that circle overhead. The second half of the day, also roughly two hours, takes in these sights before heading back toward the capital.

Before returning to your hotel, the tour stops at a local family's home for a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. You watch the beans roasted over charcoal, ground by hand, and brewed in a jebena (a clay pot), then taste the coffee made in the old way. Hotel pickup and drop-off bracket the day. An English-speaking professional guide and bottled water are included throughout.
