The experience
If you're arriving in Addis Ababa and want to see something beyond the city on your first day, this tour picks you up from the airport and builds the whole itinerary around two sites that sit about an hour northwest. Debre Libanos is the draw: one of Ethiopia's oldest monasteries, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot according to tradition. The saint spent 29 years meditating in a cave on the site, and the monastery complex still sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of a tributary of the Abbay River. The current buildings include the church built over Tekle Haymanot's tomb (Emperor Haile Selassie ordered its construction in 1961), the Church of the Cross where a fragment of the True Cross is preserved, and five religious schools. You'll also see the Portuguese bridge nearby, which despite its name was actually built in the 19th century by Ethiopians in the old Portuguese style.
From the monastery, the tour moves into the Blue Nile Gorge and the Jemma Valley, where the landscape opens into a large ravine. This is where the endemic Gelada monkeys appear. The ones with the distinctive red patch on their chest that give them the name "bleeding heart baboon." The gorge is also known for bird watching: Harwood's Francolin, Banded Barbet, Black-headed Forest Oriole, White-billed Starling, and several species of vulture (Lamergeyer's, Ruppell's and Lappet-faced) nest in the cliffs. The guide will point out what's visible as you move through the valley.
The day wraps with a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony (the beans are roasted, ground and brewed in front of you) followed by dinner. You travel in an air-conditioned minibus with a guide, and the tour includes bottled water, all entrance fees, and the meal. The full outing runs about nine hours from pickup to return.

Is this one for you?The tour runs nine hours from airport pickup to return, with walking at the monastery and through the gorge, so it works best if you have a full day free after arrival or before departure. The fixed itinerary means you see both sites and the gorge in one outing, which is the only way to fit them all into a single day from the city.

Top questions
What exactly is Debre Libanos and why is it important?
Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia's oldest monasteries, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. According to tradition, the saint meditated in a cave on the site for 29 years. The monastery complex includes the church built over his tomb, the Church of the Cross (which holds a fragment of the True Cross), and five religious schools. The buildings sit on a terrace between a cliff and a gorge, making it both a spiritual and architectural landmark.
Will I actually see Gelada monkeys in the Blue Nile Gorge?
Gelada monkeys are endemic to Ethiopia and the Blue Nile Gorge and Jemma Valley are well-known habitats for them. The guide will watch for them as you move through the gorge, though wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The area is also rich in bird species, including Harwood's Francolin and several vulture species that nest in the cliffs.
What is the Portuguese bridge and is it worth seeing?
The Portuguese bridge near Debre Libanos is a narrow stone span built in the 19th century by Ethiopians in the old Portuguese architectural style. During the rainy season, a cascade flows just below it. It's a small but photogenic stop on the route between the monastery and the gorge.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
The tour includes walking at Debre Libanos to explore the monastery complex and its churches, and walking through the Blue Nile Gorge and Jemma Valley to spot wildlife and take in the views. The itinerary is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though the terrain is uneven in places and the gorge walk involves some elevation change.
What happens during the traditional coffee ceremony?
The coffee ceremony is a social ritual in Ethiopian culture. The guide or host roasts green coffee beans over a flame, grinds them by hand, and brews the coffee in a traditional pot called a jebena, all in front of you. You'll be served the freshly brewed coffee, usually with a small snack, and it's a chance to experience a daily practice that is central to Ethiopian hospitality.
