The experience
How do you fit Ethiopia's most remote and sacred sites into one trip without spending weeks on the road? This 10-day tour threads them together with flights between regions, so you move from one landscape to the next without the long drives that eat up time. You start in Addis Ababa, visiting the National Museum (home to the fossil Lucy), the Ethnography Museum in Haile Selassie's former palace, and Merkato, one of Africa's largest open-air markets. From there, a flight takes you to Bahir Dar on Lake Tana, where you see the Blue Nile Falls and take a boat to the Ura Kidane Meheret Monastery with its ancient frescoes and manuscripts.
The heart of the tour is Lalibela, reached by connecting flights from Addis Ababa. The rock-hewn churches there (Bet Giyorgis, Bet Medhane Alem and others) are carved directly from stone and form a UNESCO World Heritage site. You spend a full day and night in the town to explore them at your own pace and, if you choose, attend a local church service at dawn. Then comes the Danakil Depression, one of Earth's most hostile landscapes. You fly to Semera and drive toward Erta Ale, an active volcano where you hike to the summit to watch molten lava bubble in the crater. That night you camp under the stars on open rocky ground. The next day you explore Dalol's surreal sulfur springs, salt flats and hot springs before driving to Mekele.
The final stretch moves into the Omo Valley's tribal territories. You fly to Jinka and drive to Turmi to spend two days with the Hamer, Dasenech, Kara and Naygatom peoples, witnessing traditional rituals and, if timing aligns, the famous bull-jumping ceremony. Your last evening in Addis Ababa includes a farewell dinner with live traditional dance before transfer to the airport. Accommodations range from hotels in the cities to a lodge in Turmi and an open-air rocky campsite in the desert. Camping gear is provided for the Danakil nights. All domestic flights, entrance fees and meals at local restaurants are included.
What’s included
- Accommodations in hotels and a lodge.
- all camping gear for the desert night.
- all domestic flights within Ethiopia.
- all entrance fees to museums, churches, monasteries and tribal areas.

Is this one for you? This tour suits travelers who want to see Ethiopia's most iconic sites (the rock churches, the lava lake, the tribal cultures) without arranging flights and logistics separately. The 10-day length fits these regions into one journey. If you have less time, look for the 8-day version, or more time, the 12-day option. You'll need at least moderate physical fitness for hikes to Erta Ale and Abune Yemata Guh Church, and the itinerary is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
What is the Blue Nile Falls like when you get there?
The Blue Nile Falls, called Tis Abay or "the smoking water," is a powerful cascade surrounded by scenic landscape. You visit it by driving from Bahir Dar on Lake Tana, then return to town for lunch before taking a boat trip to the nearby Ura Kidane Meheret Monastery.
Can you really watch lava in the Danakil Depression?
Yes. Erta Ale is an active volcano, and you hike to its summit to see molten lava bubbling in the crater. The hike happens in the evening, and you camp overnight on the rocky ground near the volcano before an optional return hike at dawn.
What do you do during the two days in the Omo Valley?
You stay in Turmi and visit the Hamer, Dasenech, Kara and Naygatom tribes. Activities include engaging with locals, witnessing traditional rituals, and attending a bull-jumping ceremony if one is scheduled during your visit. One day you drive at dawn to Omorate to see the Dasenech, then return for lunch and visit other tribes in the afternoon.
How many nights do you spend in hotels versus camping?
Most nights are in hotels in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Lalibela, Mekele and Turmi. One night is spent camping on open rocky ground near Erta Ale in the Danakil Depression, with all camping gear provided.
