The Experience
Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1942 to commemorate Ethiopia's victory over Italian occupation, holds the tombs of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw inside its walls. From there, the tour moves through the oldest neighborhoods of Addis Ababa, stopping at Tomoca in the Piazza area—Ethiopia's oldest coffee shop, operating since 1953—where you participate in the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, one of the country's most cherished cultural rituals.
Mercato, covering several square miles and employing an estimated 13,000 people across organized zones of agricultural products, spices, coffee, incense, jewelry, and leather goods, gives you the scale of Africa's largest open-air market. The National Museum of Ethiopia houses the paleontological collection in its basement, where Lucy—the fossilized remains of early hominids—sits among the most important sub-Saharan African archaeological finds. The ground floor displays artifacts from the Aksumite, pre-Aksumite, Solomonic and Gonderian periods, while the first floor shows Ethiopian art spanning from 14th-century parchment to 20th-century oil painting.
The IES Ethnographic Museum occupies Haile Selassie's former palace, surrounded by gardens and fountains on the university campus, and holds anthropological, musicological and cultural objects. The day ends at Entoto Natural Park, where Emperor Menelik II's former camp and palace once stood. At 3,400 meters altitude, the mountain is densely covered in eucalyptus trees imported from Australia during Menelik II's reign and planted widely under Haile Selassie—earning it the name "lung of Addis Ababa"—and from the top you see the full panorama of the capital and surrounding countryside.
