The experience

The day starts at your hotel with pickup and a guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language. The National Museum of Ethiopia is the first major stop. It holds Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old skeleton that anchors Ethiopian prehistory, alongside centuries of royal regalia, religious manuscripts and artifacts that map the country's arc from ancient kingdoms through the modern era. Bottled water travels with you throughout.

Merkato comes next: the sprawl of Africa's largest open-air market, where tens of thousands of vendors sell everything from spices and textiles to metalwork and livestock across dozens of neighborhoods. You walk through it with your guide rather than navigate alone, which changes how the chaos reads: the rhythms become legible. A coffee ceremony happens somewhere in the day (the exact timing flexes with what you want), a ritual where green beans are roasted, ground and brewed in front of you, then poured into small cups while incense burns.
