The experience
Six to eight hours covers the major contrasts that define Addis Ababa: modern skyscrapers standing next to corrugated iron structures, donkey carts sharing streets with cars, traditional markets alongside supermarkets. Your guide starts with a scenic drive through the city's major streets, stopping at landmarks for short walks and an introduction to Addis's history and layout. The route is built to show you both the obvious sites and the hidden places most visitors miss.
The National Museum of Ethiopia holds the 3.2-million-year-old bones of Lucy, one of the most famous fossil exhibits in Sub-Saharan Africa. The collection also spans emperor insignia, church treasures, traditional costumes, weapons, and rock sculptures from the time of Queen Saba. If you prefer ethnographic material instead, the museum at the University (founded and managed by Polish scientists), houses an impressive collection of crosses, icons, and folklore instruments. After the museum, you drive up to Mount Entoto at 3,200 meters above sea level, where a new observation deck offers panoramic views across the city. The site was Ethiopia's capital before Menelik II moved it to Addis Ababa. The old king's palace still stands, and a local museum displays royal crowns, church insignia, and costumes.
Lunch happens at a traditional restaurant where you eat Ethiopian food and drink coffee in the land where it originated. Then comes the Mercato, Africa's largest open-air market: a dense, colorful mix of modern and traditional commerce that gives a raw sense of daily city life. The day ends with a visit to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the most important church in Ethiopia, which holds the mausoleum of Emperor Haile Selassie and his wife.
