The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and heads to Unity Park, a green space built within the National Palace compound where VIP visitors can reach areas closed to the general public. You walk through gardens and see Abyssinian lions (the rare species known as the Lion of Judah and a symbol of Ethiopian royalty) along with other birds and wildlife. A lunch stop breaks the morning before you move on.
From there, the guide takes you to Meyazia 27 Square, the Victory Monument standing near the grand palace, Parliament and Ministry of Education. It marks Ethiopia's victory against Italian colonial power. Then comes the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the region's most significant collections. The centerpiece is Lucy (Dinkinesh in Amharic), a 3.5-million-year-old fossil of a hominoid woman from the species Australopithecus Afarensis. Her discovery in 1974 shifted the entire understanding of human ancestry, proving our ancestors walked upright 2.5 million years earlier than science had believed. The museum also holds artifacts from pre-Axumite civilization spanning centuries of Ethiopian history.
The tour includes time for optional souvenir shopping at local markets and craft shops before the guide drops you back at your hotel or airport. An air-conditioned vehicle and a live guide in English, Spanish, Italian or French accompany you throughout. The tour runs 6 to 7 hours and suits all fitness levels. Children from age 3 are welcome, and wheelchair accessibility is available across all sites and surfaces.
