The Experience

I didn’t expect the city to wake up so early. Our driver was already waiting outside the hotel before I’d even finished my injera breakfast—he just grinned and said “Yene konjo,” which I think means something nice (I never got it quite right). First stop was the National Museum of Ethiopia. Seeing Lucy’s tiny bones behind glass felt strangely intimate—like meeting someone you’ve only read about in school textbooks. The museum itself is a bit dim, but our guide Mesfin knew every corner and kept pointing out details I’d have missed, like how the ancient tools still had flecks of red earth stuck on them.

St. George’s Cathedral surprised me. It’s octagonal, which threw me off at first—inside, sunlight hit the stained glass just right and made these wild colors dance on the floor. There were old crowns and manuscripts in a side room; Mesfin told us stories about Haile Selassie that sounded almost mythical but then he’d laugh and say, “But you know, he loved dogs.” Outside, a woman sold incense that smelled sharp and sweet at the same time. I bought some without really knowing why.

Then came Merkato. Honestly? It’s chaos—in a good way. People everywhere, shouting prices or laughing or just weaving through stalls with baskets balanced on their heads like it’s nothing. We followed Mesfin through what felt like a maze; he stopped to show us how frankincense is graded (I still don’t get it) and let us taste a tiny spoonful of berbere spice that burned my tongue for ages after. My shoes got dusty quick but nobody seemed to care.

Entoto Mountain was quieter—the city looked soft from up there, kind of hazy in the afternoon light. You could hear birds instead of car horns for once. We ended at Tomoca Coffee by the old train station. The place smelled like roasted beans before we even went in; I ordered a macchiato that tasted richer than any coffee back home. Sitting there with tired feet and watching people come and go—felt like maybe I’d started to understand Addis Ababa a little better. Or maybe not yet.
