The Experience
The guide and driver pick you up at Bole International Airport or your hotel and head straight to the National Museum, where you spend two hours walking through archaeological collections that trace Ethiopia's history back millions of years. The centerpiece is Lucy—locally called Dinknesh, meaning "wonderful"—a 3-million-year-old hominid fossil that sits at the heart of human ancestry. From there the route moves to Menelik II Square, where the Freedom Monument stands on the site of Emperor Haile Selassie's arrival in 1944, then climbs to Mount Entoto at 3,200 meters, the highest peak in the Addis Ababa region and the location of Menelik II's first palace. The views down across the capital and surrounding forests frame a lunch break.
The afternoon centers on Merkato, Africa's largest open-air market, where you spend two to three hours moving through stalls stacked with goods from across the country. This is not a quick pass-through; the guide walks you into the negotiating and bartering that defines the place, and you see how the market actually works. On the way back, the route includes Yekatit 12 Monument—an obelisk marking a 1937 massacre—and Meskel Square, a public gathering space that hosts festivals and demonstrations. The Ethnological Museum at Addis Ababa University takes an hour and holds collections representing nearly all of Ethiopia's tribal groups, with displays on history, culture and traditions. The last stop is either Trinity Cathedral or St. George Cathedral, a baroque church unique to Ethiopia and Africa, where Emperor Haile Selassie and his wife are buried.
Bottled water and Ethiopian traditional coffee come with the tour. The guide speaks your language—English, Spanish, Italian, French or Amharic—and the driver handles all the logistics, so you move between sites without arranging transport or timing yourself.

What is Lucy and why is it in the National Museum?
Lucy is a 3-million-year-old hominid fossil, one of the oldest human ancestors ever discovered. The National Museum houses it as the centerpiece of Ethiopia's archaeological collection, and the tour spends two hours there so you can see it alongside other artifacts that tell the country's deep history.
How much time do you actually spend at Merkato market?
Merkato takes two to three hours, which is enough time to walk through the stalls, see the range of goods from across Ethiopia, and learn how negotiating and bartering work in the market. It is the largest open-air market in Africa, so the scale alone takes time to move through.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included in the tour price, though there is a lunch break at Mount Entoto where you can eat on your own. Bottled water and Ethiopian coffee are provided.
What languages does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or Amharic, depending on which language you select when you book.
Can children go on this tour?
Children are welcome from age 3. Specialized infant seats are available if you need them.
How does the tour start if you arrive at the airport?
The guide and driver pick you up at Bole International Airport and take you directly to the National Museum as the first stop. If you are staying at a hotel in Addis Ababa, pickup happens there instead.
