Lucy's skeleton sits in the basement of a museum in the middle of Africa's only uncolonized capital.
A full-day guided tour of Addis Ababa covers the National Museum of Ethiopia, the IES Ethnographic Museum, Mercato market and Entoto Natural Park, with hotel or airport pickup included. You'll stand in front of the paleontological exhibition housing Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old hominin whose 1974 discovery reshaped human origins, then move through Ethiopian art, ethnographic displays and the continent's largest outdoor market before climbing to the mountain sanctuary overlooking the city.

The experience
Your guide meets you at the airport or hotel and drives you into Addis Ababa's center to the National Museum, where the ground floor holds artifacts spanning pre-Aksumite through Gonderian periods (bronze oil lamps, rock-hewn chairs carved with ibexes, ancient inscriptions), and the basement opens onto the paleontological wing. Lucy dominates the space, but the fossilized remains of the sabre-toothed Homotherium and the savannah pig Notochoerus sit nearby, each one a window into extinct African megafauna. The first floor shifts to Ethiopian art: parchment pieces possibly from the 14th century hang alongside 20th-century oil paintings by modern masters.
From there the tour moves to the IES Ethnographic Museum, which traces Ethiopian life from birth to death across the country's cultural groups: food, religion, history, natural facts woven into displays that make the diversity tangible. Lunch happens during the day, then you head to Mercato, the largest outdoor market in Africa. The spice market, handmade baskets section and second-hand goods area each occupy their own territory within the sprawl. After the market's noise and density, Entoto Natural Park offers a shift in scale: the mountain rises high above the capital, streams flow from clear springs, and the ancient landscape opens views back down over the city. The tour ends at St. George's Cathedral on Piazza, the octagonal church completed in 1911 where both Empress Zewditu and Emperor Haile Selassie were crowned. The grey stone exterior gives way to a ceiling painted sky-blue with gilded stars and interior walls covered in mosaics and paintings by Afewerk Tekle.
An air-conditioned vehicle carries you between stops. Bottled water, coffee or tea, and lunch come with the booking. The guide speaks English and the tour runs between six and ten hours depending on how long you spend at each site. Wheelchair-accessible transportation is available, and the itinerary suits all fitness levels, though Entoto Natural Park involves some walking on uneven terrain.

What is Lucy and why is she in the National Museum?
Lucy is a 3.2-million-year-old hominin skeleton discovered in 1974 in Ethiopia's Afar region. Her remains fundamentally changed scientific understanding of human origins and sit in the museum's paleontological basement exhibition alongside fossils of other extinct African creatures like the sabre-toothed Homotherium.
What can I see at Mercato market?
Mercato is Africa's largest outdoor market, divided into sections including the Spice Market for dried herbs and seasonings, a handmade baskets area showcasing woven goods, and a second-hand items market. The scale and density make it a full sensory experience of Addis Ababa's commerce.
What makes St. George's Cathedral historically significant?
Emperor Menelik II commissioned the cathedral in 1896 to commemorate his military victory over the Italians at Adwa, and it was completed in 1911 with the help of Greek, Armenian and Indian artists. Both Empress Zewditu in 1916 and Emperor Haile Selassie in 1930 were crowned inside its octagonal stone structure.
What is Entoto Natural Park like?
Entoto Natural Park sits high above the capital as a historical sanctuary with ancient mountain landscape, clear springs feeding streams and waterfalls. It offers views back down over Addis Ababa and a physical contrast to the museum and market portions of the day.
Does the tour include meals and drinks?
Lunch, bottled water, and coffee or tea are included in the full-day tour. The guide and air-conditioned vehicle transport you between all four sites without additional stops for food purchases.
