The experience
The day starts at Holy Trinity Cathedral, an orthodox landmark known for its architecture and history. From there you move to the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to Lucy, one of humanity's oldest ancestors (note: currently closed for renovation). Next is the IES Ethnographic Museum, located inside the Addis Ababa University compound in the former residence of Emperor Haile Selassie, where you'll see artifacts from Ethiopia's many ethnic groups.
Midday brings lunch and a coffee ceremony at one of the city's oldest restaurants, with a vegan buffet and menu options. The tour then drives uphill to Mount Entoto, where the air fills with the scent of eucalyptus trees and you get a panoramic view of Addis Ababa spread below. A second coffee ceremony is available here if you want one. After descending, you'll explore one of Africa's largest open-air markets, where you can browse for souvenirs and soak in the atmosphere.
The tour finishes at Zoma Museum, which combines art, culture and eco-friendly architecture. Your guide speaks English, French, German or Arabic, and the air-conditioned vehicle carries WiFi and bottled water throughout the eight hours. The operator tailors the route to your interests (historical, cultural or nature-focused), and may add stops at local antique shops or traditional Ethiopian dance performances if time allows.
