The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive to Meskel Square, the city's main public gathering space. From there, the guide takes you to Bata Mariam Church, a circular Ethiopian Orthodox structure with vibrant biblical frescoes and a particular draw: underground crypts holding Menelik II, Empress Taitu, and other royal figures. The National Museum of Ethiopia comes next, and the centerpiece is Lucy—Dinkinesh in Amharic, meaning "wonderful"—a 3.5 million-year-old hominid fossil discovered in 1974 that reshaped how scientists understand human evolution. The museum's four exhibition sections also hold regalia and memorabilia from Emperor Haile Selassie and other rulers, plus ethnographic displays and artwork spanning traditional to contemporary work.
