The Experience

The day starts at Mercator, Africa's biggest open-air market, where you move through sections of traditional basketry, pottery and livestock alongside a recycling market where vendors craft new goods from waste. It's crowded and loud—the opposite of a curated museum—and that's the point: you see how the city actually works. From there the tour shifts to Zoma Museum, where you break for lunch in a permaculture garden planted with false banana trees and herbs. Here you watch traditional Ethiopian food being prepared, taste it, and sit through a coffee ceremony: beans roasted on a charcoal stove, ground by hand, brewed in a jebena pot, and served while incense burns in the background.

Bahita Mariam Church comes next. The compound holds giant turtles and an underground chamber where Menelik II, the founder of Addis Ababa, is buried alongside other members of the former royal family. The church also houses an original painting attributed to Michelangelo. At the National Museum, you meet Lucy—the 3.2-million-year-old skeleton of a human ancestor found in Ethiopia and one of the most complete remains ever discovered. The museum traces human evolution through specimens and artifacts that anchor Ethiopia's place in that story.

The tour ends at Mount Entoto, where the first palace of Addis Ababa's founder still stands and a museum displays Ethiopian history. From the summit you watch the city's skyline darken as the sun sets. Private transportation runs the whole day, and bottled water and snacks travel with you.
