Four open water dives, five theory sessions, one worldwide certification

The PADI Open Water Diver course in the Egyptian Red Sea is a 3-day certification class taught by PADI professionals that qualifies you to dive independently to 18 meters. You complete four open water dives in the sea, five confined water dives to learn skills, and five theory sessions; all equipment is provided, hotel pickup is included, and the certification is recognized worldwide with no renewal fees. Minimum age is 10 years old; participants must complete a health questionnaire and cannot dive within 24 hours of flying.

The Experience

The course runs over three days and covers everything you need to become a certified diver. A PADI Professional Instructor teaches all five theory sessions on land, then guides you through five confined water dives where you learn the skills in controlled conditions before moving to the open sea. The four open water dives happen in the Egyptian Red Sea, where you'll practice what you've learned and see the marine life that makes this stretch of water worth the trip.

All required scuba equipment is provided — tanks, wetsuit, regulator, buoyancy control device, mask and fins — so you show up ready to learn, not loaded with gear. The boat picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, and lunch and soft drinks are served on board during the sea dives. Your instructor speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of five other languages, so the teaching happens in whatever language you're comfortable with.

Once you finish the course, you hold a worldwide PADI certification that never expires and requires no renewal fees. You're qualified to dive independently to 18 meters anywhere in the world. If you're between 10 and 15 years old, you'll be certified to dive to 12 meters until your 15th birthday, when your certification automatically upgrades to the full 18-meter depth. The course is subject to favorable weather; if poor conditions force a cancellation, you can reschedule or choose a different activity instead.
