summary

Family buggy rides camel trekking and Bedouin BBQ in Sharm desert

You’ll race through Sharm El Sheikh’s desert by family buggy, sip hot Bedouin tea at a traditional camp, sway on a camel ride as sunset colors shift around you, then settle in for a BBQ dinner and live show under open sky. It’s an evening of laughter, new tastes, and unexpected calm where sand gets everywhere but somehow you don’t mind.

Sand everywhere — in my shoes, under my nails, even stuck to my lips from laughing too much. The drive out from Sharm El Sheikh was quick (they picked us up right at the hotel — didn’t even have time to finish my tea). By the time we reached the quad center in Naama Bay, the sun was already starting to slip sideways and everything looked gold. I’d never driven a family buggy before. Our guide, Mahmoud, explained it all with this calm patience — he grinned when my daughter called it “desert go-karting.” It’s bumpy and loud but weirdly peaceful out there; you can hear your own heartbeat between engine bursts.

We stopped at a Bedouin camp just as the light started turning pink. There was this smell — smoky but sweet — coming from their fire. They handed us tiny glasses of tea (so hot I nearly dropped mine) and showed us how to wrap scarves for the camel ride. I tried to say thank you in Arabic; pretty sure I got it wrong because one of the women laughed and corrected me gently. The camels are taller than they look on TV. Mine kept turning its head like it wanted to know what I was thinking.

The desert cools off fast after sunset. Dinner was a big open-air BBQ buffet — grilled chicken, rice, bread that tasted smoky from the coals. Kids ran around chasing each other while adults tried shisha or just sat back watching the sky turn purple-black. The show started with music that felt older than anything I know; dancers moved like they were part of the sand itself. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so comfortable sitting on a rug in the middle of nowhere with strangers who suddenly felt familiar.

I still think about that quiet moment after dinner — everyone full and tired, someone humming softly nearby, stars coming out one by one over Sharm El Sheikh. We piled back into the bus for drop-off around 8pm, dusty and happy and not really ready for it to be over.
