experience

What’s the experience like?

Heat hangs in the air as we step out of the van, sand crunching underfoot. Our guide, Hossam, waves us over—he’s got this easy smile and a knack for dodging the bigger crowds. The pyramids of Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinus rise ahead, bigger than I’d pictured. Up close, you can see where centuries of wind have chipped at the stones. Hossam points out a spot where you can still spot ancient graffiti—tiny marks from workers who built these giants.

We wander down toward the Sphinx. It’s quieter here; just the low hum of a nearby vendor grilling corn and the distant chatter of school kids on a field trip. The Sphinx’s face is weathered but somehow still watchful. Hossam shares how King Chephren’s head was carved onto a lion’s body—he even shows us a photo from his phone comparing old restoration work.

Next up: camel ride. The camels look bored but friendly, their handlers chatting in Arabic about football scores. Climbing up is trickier than it looks—the camel lurches and suddenly you’re higher than you expect, with all nine pyramids stretching behind you. Our guide knows the best angle for photos—he snaps a few with my phone while I try not to laugh at my own awkward pose.

Lunch is at a small restaurant called Felfela View, just off the main road. The smell of grilled kofta drifts through open windows. We sit on a shaded terrace with a view straight across to the pyramids—honestly, it’s hard to focus on the food with that backdrop. I try molokhia soup for the first time; it’s earthy and kind of sticky, but surprisingly good.

By late afternoon, the sun starts dipping lower and everything turns gold. We hop onto quad bikes outside the main site—helmets on, engines rumbling. The desert feels endless out here, just wind and sand and that orange light hitting the stones. We stop halfway up a dune; from there, you get this wild view of all three pyramids lined up against the sky. Hossam lets us take our time snapping photos before we head back, dust in our hair and shoes.
