The Experience
The day kicked off right in the heart of Cairo—Tahrir Square. Our guide, Ahmed, met us outside the Egyptian Museum just as the city was waking up. The air had that mix of dust and sweet bread from a nearby bakery. Inside, I got lost among ancient statues and golden masks; seeing King Tut’s treasures up close is something you just can’t get from photos. Ahmed pointed out tiny details I’d have missed—like the faded paint on a sarcophagus lid or how some artifacts still smell faintly of old wood and resin. If you’re curious about mummies, there’s a special room for that (costs extra but worth it if you’re into history).
Next stop: the Giza Plateau. The drive over was quick, but nothing prepares you for your first real look at those pyramids—they just rise out of the sand behind city traffic and donkey carts. We wandered around the base while Ahmed shared stories about pharaohs and how each stone was hauled into place. The Sphinx sits nearby, looking both fierce and oddly calm. There’s always a bit of wind here; it kicks up sand so don’t wear open shoes. Lunch was at a local spot—simple grilled chicken with rice and tahini—and honestly, it hit the spot after all that walking.
The last part took us to Khan El Khalili Bazaar. It’s noisy, colorful, and packed with everything from brass lamps to piles of spices that make your nose tingle. We had time to wander on our own; I grabbed a mint tea at Fishawi’s café while watching shopkeepers call out their deals. If you want souvenirs or just people-watch, this is the place.
