The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup and heads straight to the Valley of the Kings, where the tombs of Upper Egypt's New Kingdom pharaohs are carved into the mountain. From there you move to the Temple of Hatshepsut, the mortuary temple of the Egyptian queen whose reign shaped the dynasty, with its distinctive colonnaded terraces and wall reliefs depicting her lineage and achievements. The Colossi of Memnon (two massive statues of King Amenhotep III) stand at the west bank of the Nile as a marker of the scale of ancient construction.

The Valley of the Queens holds the tombs of pharaohs' wives and royal children, many with vibrant painted walls that show daily life and the afterlife as the ancients imagined it. Nearby, the Valley of the Nobles contains the tombs of high-ranking officials, equally impressive for their detail and preservation. Medinet Habu, an archaeological site at the foot of the Theban Hills, reveals the layout and grandeur of an ancient settlement, while Deir el-Medina, the Valley of the Workers, was home to the artisans who built the royal tombs during the 18th to 20th dynasties. The paintings inside these workers' tombs remain remarkably fresh, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of those who created the monuments.

Six to seven hours on the road means you cover substantial ground without rushing through each stop. Entry to the sites themselves is optional, so you can decide which tombs and temples to enter and which to view from outside. Lunch is also your choice.
