The Experience

The airport representative meets you before immigration, holding a sign with your name. A private air-conditioned car takes you to your Cairo hotel, where your guide walks through the week ahead—pickup times, what to bring, which temples open early. That night you're in Cairo. The next morning, you're at the Giza Pyramids before the crowds thicken. The Great Pyramid of Cheops rises 137 meters, built from 2.5 million stone blocks between 2551 and 2528 BC. You stand at the Panorama area for photos of all three pyramids at once, then move to the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. Lunch happens at a local Cairo restaurant. After that, the Egyptian Museum—one of the world's largest collections of pharaonic artifacts, the kind of place you need hours to even begin to understand.

On day three, you fly Cairo to Aswan. Your guide meets you at the exit door. You visit the High Dam, then Philae Temple, devoted to the goddesses Isis and Hathor—the entire site was disassembled and relocated to save it from the Aswan High Dam's floodwaters. Then you board your 5-star Nile cruise. Dinner is on board. The next day is optional Abu Simbel, where Ramses II's twin temples sit with four 70-foot statues of the pharaoh carved into the cliff face. If you go, you cruise to Kom Ombo afterward, a Greco-Roman temple where you can see mummified crocodiles that once basked on the ancient riverbank. The cruise continues to Edfu, where the Temple of Horus—the falcon-headed sky god, built in 230 BC—is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, its colors still vivid. Then Luxor: the Temple of Karnak with its 80-foot columns in the Great Hypostyle Hall, and the Temple of Luxor with three massive statues of Ramses II and the 50-foot-high Colonnade of Amenhotep III.

On the final full day, you disembark on the west bank of the Nile. The Colossi of Memnon stand first, then the Temple of Hatshepsut—Egypt's first female pharaoh, and the temple itself is architecturally unlike anything else you've seen. Then the Valley of the Kings, where pharaohs and nobles were buried for 500 years starting in the 16th century BC. Tutankhamun's tomb is there—the boy king, discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter. You can enter it with an extra ticket. After that, a domestic flight back to Cairo, hotel transfer, and one last night. The tour ends the next morning when you're transferred to the airport for your flight home.

All of this—the flights between Cairo and Aswan, the 5-star cruise with full board, three nights in a Cairo hotel with breakfast, every entrance fee, meals during tours, a camel ride at the Pyramids, a felucca sail on the Nile in Aswan, bottled water, and a certified guide—is included. You arrange nothing yourself. The guide handles timing, the driver handles the road, the cruise handles the river.
