The experience

You arrive at Cairo Airport and a representative meets you at the gate, handling the formalities while you head straight to your first five-star hotel. The next morning, an air-conditioned car picks you up for the Giza Pyramids (structures built over 4,000 years ago that still dominate the landscape), and the Great Sphinx, the limestone colossus with a lion's body and a pharaoh's head. Your Egyptologist guide walks you through the construction methods, the pharaohs who ordered them, and the mythology that surrounded them. The Egyptian Museum comes next, where you stand in front of Tutankhamun's golden mask and thousands of artifacts spanning millennia. By afternoon, you're on a flight to Aswan, where you spend the night in another five-star hotel.

Day three takes you to Abu Simbel, two temples carved into a mountainside by Ramses II. Four colossal statues of the pharaoh sit at the entrance, each one 67 feet tall. After lunch and a private transfer to the train station, you board for Luxor, arriving at your third five-star hotel. The next day is the longest on the ground: the Valley of the Kings holds 63 royal tombs (including those of Ramses II and Tutankhamun) cut into the west bank cliffs and filled with goods meant for the afterlife. The Temple of Hatshepsut, a mortuary temple built by one of Egypt's most powerful female rulers, sits nearby. You also see the Colossi of Memnon, two seated statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III carved from quartzite sandstone, and Karnak Temple, a 247-acre complex dedicated to Amun-Re and the largest temple ever built. On the final morning, breakfast and a drive to Cairo Airport close the tour.

Flights between Cairo and Aswan and between Luxor and Cairo are included, as are all hotel stays, transfers, dinners, taxes and the guide's expertise. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language. You choose at booking. Infants travel on an adult's lap, and the pace suits all fitness levels.

Is this one for you? This tour is built as a private experience with a single guide leading the entire journey, so the pace follows the sites and your questions rather than a group schedule. Choose it if you want the history explained by someone trained in Egyptology, not just shown to you, and if having the same guide for five days means you can ask deeper questions as you go.
