The Experience

The Jeep leaves your hotel at 7am and heads southwest toward El Fayoum, about an hour's drive from Cairo. Before you reach the main attractions, the route passes through Tunis Village, a small settlement perched on a hill overlooking a salt water lake with the desert edge visible across the water — it's one of those stops that doesn't sound like much until you're actually standing there and the scale of the landscape hits you. From there, the day splits into two very different things: the Valley of Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan), a UNESCO World Heritage site 150 kilometers southwest of Cairo, and Wadi El Rayan, which holds Egypt's only waterfall.

Wadi Al-Hitan is where the fossils are. The site contains hundreds of remains from archaeoceti, an extinct sub-order of whale that lived millions of years ago, and the concentration and quality of what's preserved here is unmatched anywhere else on earth — no other location yields this many fossils in one place, accessible and set in landscape you can actually walk through. Your guide will point out the bone formations embedded in the rock face and explain how these creatures transitioned from land animals to ocean mammals, which is one of the biggest puzzles in whale evolution. You'll do a Jeep safari through the valley, which means you're not hiking the whole thing on foot; the vehicle covers the ground and stops at the key fossil sites. The sand dunes around the area are extensive, and if you want to try sandboarding or just walk out into the dunes, that's part of the day too.

After the valley, you drive to Wadi El Rayan, which spans 1,759 square kilometers and contains two separate lakes connected by waterfalls — the largest waterfalls in Egypt. The upper and lower lakes were created from agricultural drainage, so this isn't a natural waterfall in the traditional sense, but the water cascading between them in the middle of a desert landscape is still the real thing. There are sulphur springs on the southern side of the lower lake, and the dune formations near Gabal Madwera are extensive enough that you can spend time exploring if you want. Lunch is included and happens somewhere in the middle of the day, and you'll have bottled water with you throughout. The drive back to Cairo takes about two hours, and you should be back at your hotel by early evening.

This is a long day — roughly ten hours total — and it covers a lot of ground, so the Jeep safari is what makes it work. You're not walking between sites or waiting for a group to catch up; the vehicle moves you through the valley and the landscape moves past you. The tour representative stays with your group the whole time, and the driver is happy to take photos with your phone if you want shots of yourself at the fossil sites or the waterfall. Entry fees are already paid, so you don't stop at a ticket window.
