The experience

"Don’t worry, you’ll get sand everywhere. It’s part of the fun," our driver Amr grinned as we rattled out of Cairo before sunrise. I remember thinking he was joking, but by noon I’d found grains of Fayoum in my socks and even my hair. The drive out is about 90 minutes, mostly quiet highway until the land opens up into something that feels older than time: all pale golds and sudden green. Amr pointed out Lake Qarun shimmering in the distance, telling us how his grandfather fished there for bulti. I tried to say the fish’s name in Arabic. He laughed and shook his head gently. It was already warm, but not hot yet. Just that dry, expectant air you only get near a real oasis.

We stopped first at Tunis Village. It’s small but alive: kids darting between pottery studios, women chatting over tea outside painted doors. Our guide Leila led us down a narrow lane where a potter showed us how to shape clay with hands that looked strong enough to break stone but moved so softly. There was this faint smell of wet earth and wood smoke everywhere. I bought a tiny cup (probably paid too much), but it felt right to take home something made here.

The highlight? Wadi El Rayan waterfalls: Egypt’s only ones, apparently! The sound isn’t huge or roaring. It’s more like constant applause from behind the reeds. We ate grilled chicken by the lake while dragonflies hovered over our plates (I’m not sure who won that battle). After lunch came sandboarding on the dunes, which is much harder than it looks on Instagram, by the way. I fell twice before getting any real speed, but honestly? Sliding down with sun in your eyes and laughter echoing from everyone else… I still think about that view from halfway up the dune.

We skipped Wadi Hitan this time (next trip maybe), but Amr told stories about ancient whale fossils buried out there: 40 million years old, just waiting under the sand. On the way back to Cairo, everyone got quiet for a bit except for someone humming softly up front. I don’t know if it was the tiredness or just that feeling you get after seeing something real together.
