The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Cairo hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The drive to Fayoum takes you through the desert toward Qarun Lake, where your guide explains the lake's history before you move on to Wadi El-Rayan, a protected area since 1989. This is where the landscape shifts—two man-made lakes sit in the valley, and the area draws migratory birds and birdwatchers year-round.
Once you reach the camp, you rest before heading out in a 4x4 into Wadi Hitan, the Valley of the Whales. This UNESCO World Heritage Site holds fossilized whale skeletons that show the evolutionary jump from land mammals to ocean creatures—some fossils retain their full skeletal structure, and the geological record here is what makes the site globally significant. After Wadi Hitan, you move to the Magic Lake, a saltwater lake ringed by golden dunes where you can swim. On the way back to camp, you pass Mudawara Mountain and stop at the waterfalls—the only ones in Egypt, formed by the water cascade in Wadi El-Rayan.
Back at the Bedouin camp, you have lunch (BBQ and traditional cardamom tea) and try sandboarding on the dunes—your guide gives instructions for the activity. The return drive to Cairo and your hotel wraps the day. The whole tour runs 8 hours, and you can choose between the car and guide alone, car plus guide plus lunch, or an all-inclusive option that bundles everything.
