The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel at 7 a.m., followed by a 100-minute drive in an air-conditioned car to Wadi El Rayan. Once you arrive, you switch to a 4x4 vehicle for the rest of the tour. The waterfalls themselves are the largest in Egypt: a natural phenomenon of cascading water that stands out starkly against the surrounding desert. You'll stop to photograph the Mudawara Mountains and, if conditions allow, spot wild desert animals before moving on to the main event.
The 4x4 portion is where the pace picks up. Dune bashing takes you across soft yellow sand as the vehicle navigates the dunes, then you stop to try sandboarding: strapping yourself to a board and sliding down the sparkling sand at speed. Between the driving and the boarding, you'll also visit Qarun Lake, one of the world's oldest natural lakes and Egypt's third-largest. The village of Wadi Rayan sits on a hill overlooking the lake, with views across the desert edge on the far side.
Lunch is an elaborate BBQ at a Bedouin desert camp, and the day ends with a return drive to your hotel or selected location in Cairo or Giza. Bottled water is provided throughout, and the entire outing (vehicle, guide, lunch, sandboarding gear and all fees) is included in the price.
