Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Memphis and Saqqara ancient sites

  • Meet guide in Cairo
  • Travel south to Memphis
  • Explore Memphis open-air museum
  • See Ramses II statue and Alabaster Sphinx
  • Walk in Saqqara desert landscape
  • Visit the Step Pyramid
  • Return to Cairo

“That’s older than the pyramids at Giza,” our guide said, grinning as we squinted up at the Step Pyramid in Saqqara. I’d already lost track of how many times I’d said “wow” under my breath that morning. The drive out from Cairo was quieter than I expected — less honking, more dusty palm trees flickering by. Our group was small enough that everyone got a window seat, and someone passed around sesame snacks (still not sure what they were called). The air changed as we left the city; it smelled like sun-warmed stone and something sweet I couldn’t place.

Memphis felt like stepping sideways in time. There’s this colossal Ramses II statue lying down in the open-air museum — you can walk right up to his feet, which is somehow both funny and humbling. Our guide, Youssef, told us stories about pharaohs with so much energy it almost felt like gossip. He pointed out faded hieroglyphs on the Alabaster Sphinx while a kid nearby tried to mimic his gestures. It wasn’t crowded at all — just a few other groups drifting between broken columns and palm shadows.

Saqqara was quieter. You can hear your own footsteps crunching over sand there, and sometimes just wind brushing past your ears. We wandered through tombs with walls that looked soft from centuries of dust, sunlight striping the floors through cracks above. Someone in our group asked if Imhotep really built all this by himself — Youssef just laughed and shrugged (“He had help!”). Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in front of that ancient stone — or so curious about what’s still buried out there.
