The experience

The tour starts early to beat both the crowds and the heat. You'll enter the Giza Plateau from the Sphinx Gate and begin at the Great Sphinx of Giza, which stands in front of the Pyramid of Khepren. From there you walk to the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the largest of the three, where you can see the sheer scale of the construction and form your own theories about how it was built. The second pyramid still carries part of its original casing, a detail that sets it apart from the others. You'll also visit the third and smallest pyramid on the plateau, then stop at a panoramic viewpoint where you can photograph all the pyramids in one shot, largely free of the crowds that fill the site later in the day.

After the monuments, you head back into Cairo for lunch at a local restaurant. The meal is koshary (rice, pasta, lentils, fried onions and chili sauce) a dish popular with young Egyptians. This gives you time to sit with what you've seen and talk through the mysteries of the site. The whole experience runs about five hours from start to finish.
