The experience

The Al-Azhar Mosque was the first thing built when Cairo became a capital in 970: a Fatimid foundation that still stands, still functions, still draws visitors into its courtyards and prayer halls. Your day starts there, with hotel pickup and a private air-conditioned vehicle waiting outside. The guide meets you and walks through what makes each mosque different: the scale of Sultan Hassan, built between 1356 and 1363 and still one of the most impressive structures in the city; the alabaster walls of Muhammad Ali's mosque at the Citadel; the raw age of Amr ibn al-As, which was the first mosque ever built in Africa when it went up in 641. The Citadel itself sits on a hill overlooking the whole city: Saladin built it in the 12th century and it was the seat of government for nearly 700 years.
