The Experience
Your guide picks you up from your Cairo or Giza accommodation and heads first to the Saladin Citadel, the largest Islamic monument in the city. Built in the eleventh century by the warrior Saladin and his minister, the fortress held 13 towers, seven mosques, and served as the seat of government and royal residence for over 700 years. Inside the Citadel stands the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also called the Alabaster Mosque for its walls of pale stone and gold-plated interior domes. The minarets rise 86 meters high and the structure wasn't finished until 1848.
The tour then moves into Islamic Cairo, the historic quarter founded in 640 AD and home to the greatest Islamic monuments in the city. You visit the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, built between 1356 and 1363 as an architectural wonder of Mamluki design, and the Al-Rifai Mosque next to it, completed in 1912 and now the royal mausoleum of Muhammad Ali's family—the tomb of Iran's last Shah also rests there. After a lunch break, the route shifts to Coptic Cairo and Old Cairo, where the earliest Christian churches in Egypt were built around the ruins of Fort Babylon, a Roman fortress. The Hanging Church sits literally built into the fortress wall, and the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus stands on the spot where Christian tradition holds the Holy Family rested during their flight into Egypt; many Coptic patriarchs were elected within its walls. Nearby is the Ben Ezra Synagogue, located where Moses is said to have been found, and famous for a nineteenth-century discovery of thousands of Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts hidden in its storage room.
The final stop is Khan el-Khalili bazaar, established as a trade center during the Mamluk era and still filled with silver, copper, brassware, gold and leather goods. Your guide handles the route and timing; you choose whether to add entrance fees and lunch at checkout. Air-conditioned transport and pickup from your hotel are included in every option.

What exactly is the Hanging Church and why is it built the way it is?
The Hanging Church is constructed directly into the walls of Fort Babylon, a Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo, so the church literally sits suspended above the fortress foundation. It is one of the oldest churches in Egypt and remains a major pilgrimage site for Christians from around the world.
Does the tour include entry to all the mosques and churches, or do I pay separately?
Entry fees are optional—you choose at checkout whether to add them to your booking. If you select the option that includes entrance fees, all the sites on the itinerary (Citadel, mosques and churches) are covered; if you pick the guide-only option, you can arrange entry separately or skip sites as you prefer.
Is lunch included, and if so, what kind of food will I eat?
Lunch is optional at checkout. When you select the option that includes it, a meal is provided during the midday break in Coptic Cairo; the specific menu depends on the day and the restaurant your guide chooses, but it features local Egyptian cuisine.
How long does the whole tour take, and can I adjust the pace?
The tour runs 6 to 8 hours depending on how much time you spend at each site and how many stops you want to explore fully. Since it's a private tour with a professional guide, you can ask to linger longer at any mosque, church or bazaar stall, and your guide will adjust the schedule to fit your interests.
What is Khan el-Khalili, and is it worth visiting if I'm not interested in shopping?
Khan el-Khalili is Cairo's most famous historic bazaar, established in the Mamluk era as a trade center and still operating today. Even if you don't plan to buy, it's worth walking through to see the traditional layout, the craftspeople at work, and the energy of one of Cairo's oldest commercial quarters—your guide can point out the history and architecture that most visitors miss.
Can I arrange pickup from Cairo airport instead of my hotel?
Yes, airport pickup is available; it costs an additional $15 per person if your hotel is in the airport area, New Cairo, Nasr City or Heliopolis. Standard pickup is from accommodations in central Cairo or Giza; confirm your exact location when you book.
