The experience

“Here, every stone has a story,” our guide Mahmoud grinned as we squeezed past a group of schoolkids outside the Hanging Church. He meant it: the way he pointed out the faded icons in that cool, shadowy nave, you could almost hear centuries of prayers echoing off the walls. I remember the air smelled faintly of incense and dust, and my shoes made this soft crunch on old mosaic tiles. Didn’t expect to feel so hushed in the middle of Cairo’s noise.

After that we wandered through Old Cairo, Coptic quarters where sunlight slants across narrow alleys and suddenly you’re at Ben Ezra Synagogue. It felt like walking with someone who actually lives these streets, not just reciting facts.
