The experience

Your guide picks you up at 8:00 AM on day one to start at Giza Plateau, where you'll stand before the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaura and three Queen's Pyramids. You'll face the Great Sphinx guarding the plateau, visit the Valley Temple where pharaohs were prepared for mummification, and stop at a panoramic viewpoint for photos of the pyramids against Cairo's skyline. Lunch follows at a local restaurant before you head south to Saqqara, home to the Step Pyramid of King Djoser: the oldest major stone structure in the world, built around 2700 BC. You'll explore the tomb of a high official decorated with scenes of daily life, the Pyramid of King Titi with its pyramid texts, and the Pyramid of King Unas, known for its mystical inscriptions about the afterlife. The day ends at Dahshur, where you'll see the Red Pyramid built by King Sneferu and glimpse the Bent Pyramid, a unique architectural marvel showing the evolution of pyramid design.

Day two begins at 7:00 AM with a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Alexandria, the Greek city founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC. You'll descend into the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the largest cemetery for Greeks and Romans in Egypt, discovered by chance in 1900 when a donkey's leg fell through a shaft. The three underground floors blend Ancient Egyptian art with Greek and Roman style. Next is Pompey's Pillar, the remains of the Serapium temple of the goddess Serapis, where a pillar stands atop the ruins: mistakenly named by Crusaders who thought Pompey's head had hung there. You'll visit Qaitbay Castle, built by the Mamluk sultan in 1456 AD as a fortress against enemies approaching by sea, constructed on the original site of a lighthouse. After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll see the Library of Alexandria, rebuilt in 2003 on the site of the original library founded by King Ptolemy I and completed by King Ptolemy II in the second century. The original burned during the conflict between Ptolemy XIII and Julius Caesar. Your guide returns you to your Cairo hotel by evening.

Day three focuses on Cairo itself. You'll start at the Grand Egyptian Museum, the newest and largest archaeological museum in the world, where your guide brings ancient Egypt to life through legendary artifacts and royal treasures, many displayed publicly for the first time. A true highlight is the Treasures of King Tutankhamun: jewelry, ceremonial items and personal belongings of the boy king preserved for over 3,000 years. Next comes Old Cairo, where you'll visit the Hanging Church, one of Egypt's oldest and most beautiful churches, built atop the Roman Tower of the Fortress of Babylon. You'll descend into the sacred crypt beneath the Church of Abu Serga, believed to be where the Holy Family found refuge during their journey through Egypt, then visit the Ben Ezra Synagogue, once the heart of Cairo's Jewish community. The Citadel of Salah El-Din follows, perched high above Cairo with panoramic views of the entire city. Inside stands the Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque, built in the early 19th century by Mohamed Ali, a masterpiece of Ottoman-Turkish architecture with towering minarets, gleaming alabaster walls and vast domes. After lunch, you'll explore Khan El-Khalili Bazaar, one of the oldest and most famous markets in the Middle East, where narrow alleys overflow with colorful spices, handmade crafts, jewelry, perfumes and souvenirs. Your final evening ends with a scenic dinner cruise on the Nile before your guide returns you to your hotel.
