The experience
The first thing I remember is the way the light hit the Basilica of Higüey: sort of golden and sharp, even though it was still early. Our guide, Rosa, handed me a shawl at the entrance (shoulders and knees covered, she reminded us), and I could smell incense drifting out as we stepped inside. The hush in there felt heavy but kind. There was a family kneeling by one of the side chapels. Their little girl kept peeking up at us, curious but shy. I’m not religious, but something about that space made me slow down.
Walking through Higüey after that felt like flipping to another page. The city’s streets were noisy: motorbikes zipping past, vendors calling out in Spanish (I tried to buy fruit at the market and completely messed up my numbers, Rosa laughed and helped). We stopped at Culture Square for a bit. There was music somewhere nearby, bachata maybe? It mixed with the smell of fried plantains from a food cart. I liked watching how people greeted each other here: lots of hugs, big hand gestures.
Later we drove out to Anamuya. The air changed: greener somehow, thicker with humidity and that earthy countryside smell.
