The experience
The day starts at the San Felipe Fortress, the oldest defensive structure in the Americas, where you walk the ramparts and take in panoramic views of the ocean and coastline. From there the tour moves through Puerto Plata's historic center, passing the colonial architecture, the Cathedral of San Felipe Apóstol and Parque Independencia. A guide leads you through the streets and explains the history as you go. The guide speaks English or Spanish.
After the walking portion, you head to one of three beaches: Playa Dorada if you want calm waters and resort amenities, Costambar if you're after a quieter spot for swimming and sunbathing, or Long Beach for a longer stretch of sand and coastal views. You have time to swim, walk the shore or simply rest in the Caribbean sun. Bottled water and soda are provided.
Lunch is a spread of typical Dominican dishes: stewed chicken, fried fish, rice, beans and fresh local salads, all prepared with ingredients from the island. The meal is served in a pleasant setting and rounds out the day before you return to your hotel or starting point.
Is this one for you?Hotel pickup means you don't need a car or arrange your own transport to the fortress and the city center. The fixed route covers the main historical sites in the morning, then gives you unstructured beach time in the afternoon, so you can swim as much or as little as you want.
