The experience

The tour opens at Macotrix, the rum factory, where a manager walks you through the production process from start to finish in about 15 to 20 minutes. From there the route moves through the city's colonial core: Paseo de Doña Blanca, the first hotel built in Puerto Plata and now a photo stop known as the Pink Street; the Central Park with its traditional architecture, town hall and a stop at an organic ice cream shop; and the San Felipe Apostol church. You also pass the Boulevard and get a panoramic view of the city from the cable car vantage point.

The middle stops are built around Dominican crafts and food. At the Cigar Factory on Umbrella Street, you watch how cigars are rolled and make one yourself if you want to. The Amber Museum houses precious stones and animal fossils in a cave-themed display. Two chocolate factories show the process from seed to finished product, and you taste Dominican hot cocoa. Pachuche Bar and Bistro offers cigars and drinks. Fort San Felipe, the 16th-century fortress at the harbor, displays the weaponry used to defend the coast from pirates.

The final 45 minutes happen at Monkeys Home, where you hold and feed the animals, take photos and enjoy a tour of the coffee and cocoa plantations with tastings. Soda, bottled water and WiFi on board are included. The air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and returns you there when the tour ends.
