The experience
Four to five hours is enough to move through Puerto Plata without rushing. The tour picks you up outside the port and moves through the city's layered history: the colonial center around Parque Central, where the statue of General Gregorio Luperón stands among the cathedral and local shops; the Amber Museum, where you see fossilized resin containing insects and plants preserved for millions of years; and the 16th-century San Felipe Fortress, built to defend against pirates and now offering views across the Atlantic from its hilltop position. Your guide is a local who speaks English, Spanish, French or German. You choose at booking.
The route also takes in the working side of Puerto Plata. At the Del Oro Chocolate Factory, you watch cacao beans move from harvest through roasting to the finished product, with a chance to taste the results. The cigar factory shows you artisans hand-rolling Dominican tobacco by hand, and you can see the whole process from cultivation to the final product. Macorix House of Rum walks you through rum-making from sugarcane to aging, though tastings and cocktail-making cost extra. Umbrella Street is the photo stop: a pedestrian walkway lined with colorful umbrellas that create a canopy overhead. Playa Dorada offers a stretch of golden sand and calm water if the schedule allows time to stop.
Transport is private by car, van or minivan with air conditioning. Bottled water and soft drinks come with you. The schedule is built around your ship's departure time, so you're guaranteed to be back before it leaves. Lunch and alcoholic beverages are not included, though you can buy food along the way.
