The experience
The tour starts at the Macorix rum factory, where you taste different types of rum and liqueurs made from sugarcane juice and learn to distinguish between them. From there, the guide walks you through Puerto Plata's old town: the main square ringed by colorful colonial houses, St. Philip's Cathedral, the city hall, and two of the city's most photographed streets: Umbrella Street, lined with amber shops and cigar makers, and Pink Street, named after a 19th-century Italian hotel owner and now a mural-covered photo spot.
The cable car takes you up Mount Isabel de Torres to nearly 800 meters, where you meet the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the bay and city. The botanical garden at the summit is full of tropical trees, vines, ferns and flowers. You'll see birds, lizards, koi carp and turtles. On the way back down, you drive the Malecon waterfront boulevard to see the beaches, fishing boats, and murals depicting Dominican symbols and a statue of Neptune rising from the waves.
Lunch is a typical Dominican meal: roasted chicken or fried fish with rice and beans or fried plantains. After eating, you visit the chocolate factory to learn how organic Dominican cacao becomes chocolate, taste a variety of products, and discover what white chocolate is made from and how cocoa tea works. The tour also includes a stop at Fort San Felipe, a 16th-century fortress on a rocky promontory with views of the open ocean, the passenger ship terminal and Mount Isabella. Bottled water, coffee and soda are provided throughout.
