The experience

“Lean forward a little,” our guide called out as my horse picked its way over the gravel path, hooves crunching softly under the thick shade of palm trees. I could hear birds somewhere above us: quick bursts of song that faded as we got closer to the coast. The air felt heavy but fresh, with that salty hint you only get near the ocean in Puerto Plata.

We broke out of the trees and suddenly there was nothing but open sky and the wide sweep of Bergantin beach ahead. The horses seemed to perk up too, their pace quickening as the sand grew softer underfoot. Waves rolled in just enough to brush against their legs, cool and foamy. Our guide paused us for a photo: honestly, it’s hard not to smile with that turquoise water behind you and your feet dangling from a saddle.

After riding for about an hour, we stopped at a small bar right on the beach.
