The experience

I barely had time to worry about my lack of riding skills before we were bumping down a little road outside Las Terrenas, early sun already making the air thick. The ranch dogs trotted out to greet us at Rancho Playa, and I noticed right away how everyone seemed to know each other: our guide, José, gave a nod to an old man passing by with sacks of mangoes. There was a quick safety talk (I probably looked nervous) and then they matched me up with a horse named Luna who seemed more interested in scratching her nose than galloping anywhere.

The first stretch took us through these tangled green trails. You could smell wet earth and something sweet I couldn’t place (José later pointed at some cocoa pods hanging above). The pace was slow enough that I stopped worrying about falling off. We passed coffee plants and kids waving from behind fences. My Spanish is terrible but one of the guides joked with me anyway.
