The experience

The day starts with pickup at 7:30 a.m. from your hotel. The drive northwest takes about two hours, and you'll stop at a scenic viewpoint along the way: a good place to photograph the landscape before you reach the lake itself. Lake Enriquillo sits roughly 40 metres below sea level and is surrounded by a hot, dry climate, though springs and small rivers keep certain areas surprisingly fertile. The boat trip is where the wildlife appears: you'll head to a section of shoreline where crocodiles are often spotted in their natural habitat.

On the return journey, the route passes through Neyba, a village known for its wine production, and then Las Marías, a popular local gathering place. You'll have a traditional lunch here before your driver takes you back to your hotel. The pace is relaxed on the return, and the whole day runs about nine hours from start to finish. You'll have bottled water and soda throughout, and the vehicle is air-conditioned.
