Float through Dalmatian canyon waters with swimming breaks and local stories
You’ll float through quiet green stretches of the Cetina River with a local guide who keeps things light (and helps if your sandal escapes). Expect gentle rapids, time to swim in fresh canyon water, and stories about Dalmatian life along the way. The Experience
“If you fall in, just laugh — the river’s not cold today,” Luka grinned as he handed me the tube. We were somewhere near Zadvarje, sun already warming the rocks and that kind of dry grass smell in the air. I’d never tried river tubing before — I mean, I’m not really a ‘water person’ — but somehow it felt like everyone in our group was in on a secret. The Cetina looked almost too green to be real, like someone had turned up the saturation. You could hear cicadas even over the water.
I’ll admit, getting into the tube wasn’t exactly graceful (my sandal floated away for a minute — Luka just fished it out with his paddle and winked). But once we started drifting along those quieter stretches of river, it was honestly… peaceful? There were moments where all you heard was water slapping gently against rubber and some distant laughter ahead. Then every so often we’d hit these tiny rapids — nothing wild, but enough to make us all yelp and grip the handles tighter. The sun kept flickering through leaves overhead, dappling everything in this soft gold light.
We stopped at this bend where you could swim if you wanted (I did), and I swear the water tasted faintly of stone and pine needles. The kids from another family were splashing around while our guide told a story about how locals used to float logs downriver here. He said something about “Dalmatian patience” — I didn’t quite get it but everyone laughed anyway. After floating a bit more, we finally climbed out near some old stone steps. My arms were tired but in that good way, like after hiking or swimming in the sea. I still think about that view back up the canyon wall — sunlight bouncing off wet rock, everything smelling clean and sharp.
