Paddle untouched bays and sea caves along Vis's northwest coast

A 4-hour guided kayak from Komiža explores the Geopark Vis archipelago, paddling the island's indented coastline to three secluded beaches, the ruins of Manjarema fort and Barjoska Bay, where the Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was filmed. The guide speaks English or Croatian. Kayak, life jacket and dry container are provided.

The experience

The kayak leaves Komiža and follows the northwest coast of Vis, an island whose jagged shoreline, sea caves and hidden bays make it one of the Adriatic's most rewarding paddling grounds. You'll stop at three beaches along the way, each one a chance to rest, swim or explore on foot. The route passes Manjarema fort, whose stone remains mark the site of the 1866 Battle of Lissa, a naval engagement that shaped the region's history.

The final stop is Barjoska Bay, where the film crew for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again set up their cameras. You'll have time to swim in the bay, walk the shoreline or simply sit under the pine trees while the scent of rosemary, lavender and over a thousand other herb species that grow on the island fills the air. The whole paddle takes four hours. Morning and sunset departures are both available.

A guide leads the trip and narrates in English or Croatian. You paddle a two-person kayak with a barrel-shaped dry container for your belongings and wear a life jacket throughout. The operator notes that moderate fitness is needed for the paddle. The activity is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns or pregnancy.
