He had that kind of sun-worn face you see on people who actually live outside, not just talk about it. We were standing by the edge of the Zrmanja River, trying to look confident in our life jackets while a couple of local kids watched from their bikes. The water was colder than I expected when I dipped my hand in — almost sharp against the heat rising off the rocks.
The first stretch was quiet enough that you could hear birds and this weird clicking sound frogs make (Luka said they’re “Zelene žabe” but I probably butchered that). My friend kept steering us into reeds, which made Luka laugh from his own canoe up ahead. The canyon walls felt huge — not in a showy way, more like they’d been there forever and didn’t care if we noticed or not. Somewhere around a bend, someone started singing softly in Croatian and it echoed back at us — honestly gave me goosebumps.
We stopped for fruit near the end, sticky hands and all, sitting on warm stones while Luka passed around fizzy orange soda. I still think about how sweet those plums tasted after paddling for hours. There’s something about being tired in a good way, skin salty from spray, shoes full of sand. The drive back was quiet except for someone snoring (not naming names), windows down so we could smell pine trees all over again.
