The experience

“Don’t worry, the river does most of the work,” joked Luka as he handed us our paddles. He had that kind of sun-worn face you see on people who actually live outside, not just talk about it. We were standing by the edge of the Zrmanja River, trying to look confident in our life jackets while a couple of local kids watched from their bikes. The water was colder than I expected when I dipped my hand in: almost sharp against the heat rising off the rocks.

There’s something about being tired in a good way, skin salty from spray, shoes full of sand.
