The experience
The Norin River flows through the Neretva Valley in Dalmatia, and this paddle starts at Narona, an ancient Roman settlement whose museum sits on the archaeological site itself. Your guide meets you at the base, hands over all the gear you need (kayak, paddle, life jacket, dry bag), and walks through safety before you push off. The history of the river and the city comes up early, grounding the paddle in something older than the landscape itself.
You paddle downstream for about 4 miles with the current at your back, moving at whatever pace feels right. Midway through, the group pulls ashore at a secluded spot (green and quiet), where you can swim, rest and eat seasonal fruit or vegetables from the valley. The whole thing takes around 3 hours from start to finish, which means you're not fighting the water or racing the clock.
At the end of the paddle, the kayaks come out of the water and you walk to a local restaurant for a drink or lunch. If you're driving, one of the guides takes the kayaks back to the parking area. If you're not, you stay put and let the landscape settle while you eat. Bottled water is included throughout, and the guide speaks English.

Is this one for you?The guide leads in English, so you follow the commentary and history without a language barrier. The 3-hour length and downstream current mean the paddle works for families with children, older travelers and anyone new to kayaking: fitness level is not the deciding factor here.
